Middle Rhine Supersite

The Host Organisation for the Middle Rhine Supersite will be the German Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) at Karlsruhe, in collaboration with the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG, Koblenz).

The Rhine is by far Europe’s most important waterway and is navigable for about 800 km. Barrage construction, river rectification and regulation, implementation of flood defences and other anthropogenic measures and uses throughout two centuries have taken their toll on sediment supply, river continuity, lateral connectivity and biodiversity.

Against this background, the Middle Rhine Supersite is well suited to conduct research on today’s challenges of a high-traffic and hugely modified waterway in order to reach agreements between ecosystem health and competing demands and to develop management solutions for its sustainable use. The Supersite will cover Germany’s free-flowing section of the river, about 530 km to the Dutch border, where it connects to the Rhine-Meuse-Delta Supersite somewhat further downstream.
