Elbe-North Sea Supersite:

Funding to Set Up a Research Platform in Tesperhude

February 2020

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), Institute of Coastal Research, near Hamburg in Germany, is coordinating the Elbe-North Sea Supersite and has secured funding for the next two years to establish a swimming research platform in Tesperhude at the Elbe, which will be the heart of the Elbe-North Sea Supersite. The total costs are around 850.000 €. On February 17, the minister for economic affairs from the state Schleswig-Holstein Dr. Buchholz visited the HZG to hand over the approval letter for setting up the research platform, which is funded by European Regional Development Funds (50%), by the state of Schleswig-Holstein (15%), and by the HZG (35%). Besides the minister Dr. Buchholz, HZG’s scientific director Prof. Dr. Rehahn and Geesthacht’s mayor Mr Schulze were present as well as several representatives from small and medium enterprises, and the Hamburg Port Authority, who are supporting the project. The research platform will be set up about 8 km upstream of the weir in Geesthacht, thus the beginning of the estuary, and about 1.5 km away from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht.

The research platform consists of a swimming ponton system, which follows the water level along two piles, and a container with diverse sampling and measurement systems. The measurement systems provide continuous, high resolution and near real-time data regarding various dissolved and particulate matter (e.g. nutrients, pollutants, suspended matter, microalgae), which are imported from the middle Elbe into the Elbe estuary. These determine the turnover of matter in the Port of Hamburg and further downstream until the adjacent North Sea. Furthermore, the research platform can be used to develop and test new methods and technologies. The project started in October 2019 and ends in September 2021. Afterwards the research platform will be fully operational.
